1982

The Bingo Tax Act authorizes charitable bingo

1980s

Video poker grows rapidly, reaching a peak of more than 30,000 machines in the late 1990s

1998

A central monitoring system for video poker is established but never implemented

1999

A scheduled vote to let the citizens decide whether to keep video poker was declared unconstitutional by the state Supreme Court

2000

Video poker machines are banned effective July 1
In November, voters approve a measure to establish a state lottery

2002

The South Carolina Education Lottery begins ticket sales in January
The Lottery launches Pick 3 in March, Carolina 5 in June and Powerball in October

2003

Pick 4 launches in January

2004

The legislature authorizes bingo to be played on electronic devices

2005

Palmetto Cash 5 replaces Carolina 5 in February

2007

The Lottery’s first raffle game is drawn in January

2008

The Lottery introduces MegaMatch 6 in February

2009

MegaMatch 6 is discontinued in December

2010

Mega Millions is added in January

2013

The Lottery launches Carolina Cash 6 in April; the game is discontinued in October

2015

The Lottery launches the multi-state game Lucky for Life in January

 

Lottery

The South Carolina Education Lottery was established in 2001 and ticket sales began in January 2002 with instant games. The current game offerings include instant tickets, Powerball, Mega Millions, Lucky for Life, Pick 3, Pick 4, Palmetto Cash 5 and Add-A-Play (instant games printed through the terminal when included in a base game purchase). The Lottery also offers limited-run raffle games.

Lottery proceeds are used to support improvements and enhancements for educational purposes and programs as provided by the General Assembly; the Legislature decides how lottery funds are appropriated each year.

Charitable gaming

Nonprofit groups organized for fraternal, religious or charitable purposes which operated in South Carolina for at least three years may apply for a license to conduct bingo.
